WYSAH Grand Opening

Events, General News, Our Showroom

Over the weekend of 22nd and 23rd of April, we were delighted to welcome so many old friends, suppliers, local businesses and new customers for two days of food, drink and, of course, great music as we celebrated the grand opening of our new showroom.

It was both humbling and gratifying to see so many people over the two days; all of whom seemed to enjoy themselves and we received many compliments on the new premises.

Both demonstration rooms are already sounding really great with the larger room having Linn 350 Exakt and Klimax DSM in it, and the smaller room having Linn 530s with Akurate DSM.  The large TV (85 inch Samsung LED) wowed people as well, especially with 4K UHD content being displayed from our Kaleidescape Strato movie player.

Thank you to all who came, for your support and compliments.  We look forward to seeing you all again soon and, for those who were not able to attend, please do drop us a line and arrange to come over and see what we’ve created.

Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) 2016

General News

ISE 2016 - What You See and Hear

The annual Integrated Systems Exhibition (ISE) in Amsterdam has grown ever larger and more important in the What You See and Hear calendar.  Steve spent two days at ISE 2016, meeting with our suppliers and looking at the latest innovations within our industry.

The key technologies that we were excited by were primarily in video presentation.

OLED screens are, finally, becoming more affordable and the performance is just staggering.  LG have led the way until now and continue to do so, however Panasonic are now snapping at their heels and their screens are quite astonishing with black levels that really do have to be (not!) seen to be believed.

Today it seems that nearly every display device is 4K and more and more now support HDR which, in our opinion, is a
hugely exciting development.  There’s still confusion and some obfuscation from the industry on what 4K truly is, and the content is still lacking. Beyond Sony Pictures, most film productions are still not shot in 4K and even fewer are using HDR.  But when they get it right, it is quite mesmerising.  There are many challenges to overcome in our installations with 4K, but with the help of Crestron DigitalMedia distribution we are confident that we are creating systems that are ready to adapt to the changing needs of the coming years.

File 29-02-2016, 09 36 54Talking of Sony, once again, the Sony VPL-VW5000ES laser projector stole the show with one of the best demonstrations Steve has ever seen.

ISE 2016 was also an opportune time for Steve to spend time with many of our friends and suppliers within the industry to discuss our new showroom and some of the technology we will have on demonstration.  We were very keen to have Stealth Acoustic Invisible speakers in the showroom as they’ve been a revelation for us over the past couple of years.  We have a number of projects under our belts with them now, including one with over 60 units in the main house alone, and we’ve been amazed by the performance they have consistently delivered and the company have helped and supported us in any way possible.  We’re really pleased to have been able to incorporate their highest performance invisible speaker into the showroom and look forward to amazing you all with them.  We will have more news over the coming weeks on other technologies we’ve incorporated into the new showroom.

We were delighted to see that our main lighting control supplier, Lutron, have started to ship the long-awaited Palladiom keypads.  We have seen prototypes and development models over the past year or so and we’re really excited to see the finished product.  They look and feel amazing in use and we’re very much looking forward to using them on some future projects.

Overall, ISE 2016 was a huge success. It’s attendance was up once again, officially positioning it as the world’s largest AV and systems integration trade show.  It reconfirmed that our industry is in great shape and ready to take on the challenges that ever increasing demands place on it, particularly in the video sector.

It’s always great to take a couple of days out of the day-to-day work and get truly excited and inspired by the technologies and the passion of those who create them for us.  Here’s to another great ISE show in 2017!

Delivering the exceptional

General News, Integrated Control, Light Control, News & Events, Whole House Audio

This year has seen us deliver the largest project we have ever undertaken, with a value of around half a million pounds for this phase.  The first phase of the project has been the main house and, over the coming years, we will deliver similar services into a number of other properties that form part of the entire project.

Unfortunately, for security reasons, we can not share many photos of the actual rooms in the house, but trust us, the results are quite astonishing!

The project featured 28 individual audio zones, utilising invisible Stealth Acoustic plaster-in speakers throughout and a Crestron Sonnex audio distribution system and amplifiers.  The Stealth speakers mean that no speakers are on view anywhere in the property (other than the media room and courtyard gardens).  Just because the speakers are invisible does not mean their performance is lacking, even we have been amazed by the performance in many of the rooms.

There are 11 zones with TV displays ranging from 85 inch LED screens to 32 inch waterproof Aquavision screens.  All of the high-definition video sources are distributed using a fibre-optic network based on Crestron Digital Media hardware.  We are distributing many sources (around 30 individual sources) ranging from Sky HD decoders to Apple TV to Kaleidescape Movie Players.  The system has the ability to be upgraded to 4K should the family want to incorporate 4K sources in the future.

Control over all audio-visual, heating, lighting and intercom systems is presented in very intuitive, easy-to-use interfaces ranging from simple hand-held remote controls for fast channel-surfing up to 10-inch in-wall Crestron touchscreens.  The ease-of-use was a clear priority for the family and we spent considerable time creating a new series of Crestron layouts that are identical across all interfaces and have had fantastic feedback from all that have used them.

Touchscreen source selection page

There are around 160 circuits of lighting within the main house and it’s gardens and courtyards.  These, along with a number of electric blinds, are all controlled with a Lutron QS system to offer exceptional dimming performance throughout.  The house had an older Lutron Homeworks dimming system in place and we were able to retain a number of dimming panels from that system which had a very beneficial impact on the costs.  The keypads were all replaced with custom units that have then all been painted to match the décor in the room.

The demands of the client have required us to develop solutions to offer exceptional reliability and resilience against any equipment failures.  We have looked at every facet of what we do, both in terms of the hardware we use and the software used to control these systems.  We have developed a number of innovative solutions that ensure that we are able to both monitor and interrogate any of our systems remotely.  In the case of any failures of sources such as Sky HD decoders, the house staff can simply press a button on an internal website that both emails us to let us know about the failure and simply swaps the failed box out, within software, for one of the spare units we have in the rack.

Beyond the audio-visual elements, we also have complete integration and control with the very large and complex Building Management System from Trend.  We are able to offer the homeowner and their staff very granular control over their environment with a number of very unique characteristics based on the family’s specific requirements.  This was one of the largest number of heating/cooling zones we’ve interfaced with and it has all worked as designed and the family can have the control they requested for this very important aspect of the project.

In one of the more interesting special projects on this large project, we liaised between the many parties involved in creating a full golf-simulation room with a large projection screen and high-speed motion capture cameras to offer the homeowners the ability to play a round on a golf course of their choosing, whatever the weather and all within arm’s reach of a bar!  It was a first for us and a very enjoyable part of the project that we hope will give the family many hours of enjoyment.

It has been a great pleasure to work on such a challenging project and we’re really looking forward to the next phases on the properties.  It has helped us develop and improve in virtually every area as a company and we look forward to applying many of the tricks we’ve learnt onto many future projects, large and small.

Naim NAC-N272 pre-amplifier and 250 DR power amplifier

Hi-Fi
nac272_2

Naim NAC-N272

These two new Naim products are revolutionary and offer power, grip and musical performance at half the price of previous Naim incarnations.

Linn took a lead on Naim with streaming music but boy have Salisbury caught up!.

The Naim NAC-N272 is a combined streamer and self-powered pre-amplifier. It is outstanding and, like the new NAP250DR power amplifier, stunned us even fresh out of the box and not run in. It sounds just right. Musical,  natural and involving.

Just as important is the absolutely stunning new NAP 250 DR.

The Naim NAP 250 is one of the most iconic Hi-Fi products ever made and has set an industry standard since first launched back in the 1970’s. Since then there have been changes and improvements in performance but nothing prepared us for this new incarnation. It uses Naim’s recently developed DR (Discrete Regulator) technology allied to the new NA009 output transistor. This is revolutionary and was especially and expensively developed for the flagship £150,000.00 Naim Statement amplifier. The combination of these two technologies results in a power amplifier that set’s a totally new standard of performance in its sector. More powerful but at the same time more delicate with a noise floor 40 times lower than previous models it massively builds on the earlier versions performance with no flaws or compromise. The NAP 250 DR substantially outperforms not just the older 250 and 135’s but even last year’s NAP 300 and is less than half the price.

This combination is attractive as it does all of this in only two (very heavy) boxes. For some of our loyal Naim owners this low box count could be an interesting direction to take, especially if considering streaming.

If you want more information please call Colin.

Linn Krystal cartridge

Hi-Fi

Linn-Krystal-Detail

A dilemma for many LP12 owners has been their loyalty to the brand when it comes to a £1000 pickup cartridge.  We have been selling Linn’s Klyde moving coil since 1992 and it is very pleasing and musical.

However, some LP12 owners have wanted a more detailed and incisive performance and have gone over to other brands like Lyra and Dynavector.  We have been happy to offer an alternative and we have been selling the excellent Dynavector XX2.  However, when it comes to playing the tune, Linn cartridges still show the way and beat others on an LP12. But good as they are, they never have quite the correct and considered balance of a Linn cartridge. Now you can have your cake and eat it.

We are very proud and excited to be one of the first Linn dealerships to have the new Linn Krystal cartridge on demonstration.

The Krystal has been designed by senior mechanical engineer and analogue wizzkid, David Williamson, to replace the 23 year old Klyde, and  this new cartridge employs many of the mechanical advantages learned during the development of their £3000 Linn Kandid.

As you can see it employs carefully machined 3 point mount as originally used in the Troika but with a much more lightweight and modern superior rigid skeletal generator.

It’s the stunning  £1200 cartridge many have waited for. Musical, tuneful and balanced with musical insight beyond other products in this sector.

It is on demonstration now and there is also a very attractive Linn LP12 promotion running alongside the launch during the next few weeks.

Please contact Colin for more information.
